The idea is to combine two of the most popular Hocking Hills activities (canoeing and ziplines) into a one day event. Since the Super Zip towers over the Hocking River it made sense to combine the activities into a package

Super Zip!

Over a quarter mile long, and speeds as fast as 50 mph is the answer to all of your requests for a “higher, longer, and faster” zip. Just accessing the new SuperZip is breathtaking! You can reach the “launch pad” by traversing a series of three elevated walkways and two scenic tree platforms, all leading to a 75 foot tower. Launching two at a time from the tower, you’ll plunge into the forest, fly through the tree canopy — until the bottom drops out at the edge of a rock cliff — then swoop down the middle of the Hocking River... all this while in a “super hero” flying position! You’ll want to zip it again and again.

How does it work?

You can combine this experience with our Trip III Clear Creek to Livery canoe trip. This experience will be sold as an "add on" upon arrival. The price is $30 for the first zip and $20 for each additional zip. The customer will be issued a wrist band for each purchased zip. Once you arrive at the Super Zip (It usually takes about 45 minutes from Trip III launch) you will be shuttled to the top of the Super Zip. After you complete one of the most thrilling experiences of your life you jump back in your boat to continue the canoe trip.

Old Town Nalu Kayak

The Stand Up Kayak
The Ocean Nalu kayak and paddle board hybrid is a great solution for the paddlesport enthusiast. As a sit on top kayak (SOT), the Ocean Nalu handles moderate surf and flat water with excellent maneuverability and stability. As a paddle board, the Nalu works great as a recreational board for the beginner to intermediate stand-up paddle boarder. The best part is you get both in one lightweight and easy to manage hull. The Nalu Stand up offers an entirely unique kayaking experience on the Hocking River. It is actually made to stand up during the ride on the Hocking, giving our customers the thrill of a moderate surf. The Nalu Kayak is also super comfortable. It comes with a seatback and pad so you can sitdown also. One of the best advantages of the Nalu on the Hocking is it allows one to see more wildlife. The river is full of leather back turtles, Great Blue Herons and beavers. Being able to stand up gives one more visiability to the natural sorroundings. It is should be stated that the Nalu is not for everyone. It is more for those who enjoy kayaking and are interested in trying something different. Box 758
Logan, OH 43138

Subject: Chieftan Drive bridge construction and detour

To The Editor:
In Ohio there are only really three seasons: Pot Hole Season, Mud Season and Road Construction Season. It is Road Construction Season that has the most impact this time of year; Road Construction Season being that interminable length of time, stretching from late Spring, through Summer and Fall, and sometimes into early Winter.
Throughout Pot Hole Season and Mud Season we anxiously anticipate the arrival of repair crews so that we’re relieved of the suspension-jarring, tire-flattening and simply annoying cracks, fissures and pot holes of the previous two seasons. Yet, when the crews arrive, we fast become impatient with the noise, traffic delays and ill-conceived detours and road closures. It is the latter that is creating a major problem in Hocking County at this time.
The replacement of the bridge over the Hocking River at Chieftan Drive has resulted in a road closure with no logical detour being offered despite the fact that one is readily available. Instead of the logical and easy detour across Enterprise-Iles Road, the County Engineer has chosen a detour that directs drivers east on 33 and north on 664 through the worst traffic bottleneck in the county. Not only is this a detour devoid of common sense, it is dangerous. At times throughout the Memorial Day weekend, eastbound traffic from 33 trying to take the ramp onto 664 was so backed up that drivers had to pull over into the berm. This takes The County Engineer’s decision from illogical to outright dangerous and leads me to ponder several conclusions: our engineer is no longer fit for the job, lacking the faculties of common sense and safety required to make a sound professional opinion, and/or he harbors such resentment against businesses along Chieftan Drive that his sound judgment is rendered incompetent.
The current bridge replacement project has been in the works for many years, but preceding this project was another bridge replacement – that of the bridge over the Hocking River on Enterprise-Iles Road. It was the impression of many members of our community that part of the justification for the $375,000 expense was the preparation for the current larger bridge replacement project on Chieftan Drive. It appears that was not the case because despite the fact that there is no road construction activity on Enterprise-Iles Road, it has been closed to the public for the endurance of the current project on Chieftan Drive – another example of the County Engineer’s lack of sound judgment and outright vindictive nature, not to mention a grotesque waste of the taxpayers money! By closing Enterprise-Iles Road to the public, that $375,000 bridge has become private access, paid for by the public, at the cost of $10,000 per Enterprise-Iles household!
The County Engineer’s public excuse for not routing drivers onto Enterprise-Iles Road has something to do with speeding traffic, liability involved by utilizing speed bumps to slow down that traffic and Enterprise residents allowing children to play in the street.
My answers to those arguments are:
1. Use the officers who are currently harassing drivers who attempt to use Enterprise-Iles Road to monitor speeders instead.
2. A lawyer can call anything a liability of you want him to.
3. It’s a little condescending to believe that residents along Enterprise-Iles Road cannot keep their children out of the road. I’m confident that they are up to the task.
One could argue that someone is always going to be inconvenienced during road construction, and that is true. But the inconveniences must be weighed using facts and sound logic. The facts in relation to the current detour are this:
1. This detour further contributes to an already congested and dangerous bottleneck on 664 in front of Walmart.
2. There is no sign at 664 and Chieftan Drive directing folks back onto Chieftan Drive, creating confusion for drivers from out-of-town.
3. It is tourist season. One business affected by this closure is 100% dependent upon tourism for its’ income – the Hocking Valley Canoe Livery. The detour not only directs traffic away from this business, but redirects that traffic directly past their competitor. Tourism also increases revenue for other businesses on Chieftan Drive as well.
4. This business is being pro-active by changing signage and issuing directions to every customer through telephone and email contact. It is not enough – some people are still angry or confused. Some drive directly to the competition by accident, others choose alternative activities.
5. Hocking County has a 13% unemployment rate. The Hocking Valley Canoe Livery hires 15-20 seasonal employees, providing temporary relief to their households four to five months out of the year. Many of those employees are adults that have families to feed and bills to pay.
Nationwide, the unemployment rate among teenagers who want to work is 75% because they simply cannot find jobs. This business provides employment to high school and college students as well, allowing some relief to their parents’ stretched budgets and making it possible for students to help pay for their own college expenses.
6. The Hocking Valley Canoe Livery has already suffered a measurable slow-down from the road closure. Should this continue, employees will face reduced hours or be let-go altogether.
7. The Hocking Valley Canoe Livery pumps tax dollars into the local community and their customers spend money in local businesses. With the county suffering cuts due to decreased tax dollars, do they really want to throw away any amount of tax revenue?
8. Traffic on Enterprise-Iles Road can be controlled; it is not the first time traffic from a county road has been detoured onto another county road – this is not a major feat.
9. Parents and caregivers can be relied upon to be extra vigilant and keep their children out of the streets.

The Hocking Valley Canoe Livery does feel targeted in this action – our entire income is generated solely within the projected five-month period of the bridge replacement project and will suffer more than any other business as a result. We know that even if the logical detour onto Enterprise-Iles Road is made, that there will still be some inconvenience because at some point in the bridge replacement process, traffic on the river itself will be closed. This is a costly but wholly unavoidable inconvenience and I accept that. But what is not acceptable is the total absence of logic expressed by the current detour and the County’s refusal to abide by the Ohio Revised Code 5543.17, which is very clear about these situations:

“The engineer shall, whenever practicable, so prepare the plans and specifications for an improvement as to avoid closing to traffic at any one time the entire width of the highway or bridge being improved.”

O.R.C. 5543.17 further discusses how the engineer must proceed, regarding closures, detours and signage, and includes the instruction that his determination must be made in writing and filed with the board of county commissioners. If the County Engineer did follow the Ohio Revised Code, then the Hocking County Commissioners are also complicit in the illogical decision to completely close the bridge on Chieftan Drive, close Enterprise-Iles Road to the public and detour traffic onto 33 and 664.
Upon reading O.R.C. 5543.17 one thing becomes very clear: the spirit of the code indicates that the construction should be accomplished with as little disturbance to traffic as possible.
Using Enterprise-Iles Road for the detour is the most physically practicable, cost-effective and safe option in this situation and should be used for the duration of the Chieftan Drive bridge replacement project, not only for the benefit of my business, but for the safety of everyone who travels Chieftan Drive, 664 and route 33.

Sincerely Yours,

Amish Camper Cabins are Here!

The Wait is Over

These are sleeper cabins built especially for campers who want the outdoor adventure experience in Ohio without pitching a tent. It is recommended to bring a flashlight

The New Kayak King!

The JACKSON DAYTRIPPER!

Introducing the Jackson Daytripper

The Jackson Daytripper has reinvented the sport of recreational kayaking. The Jackson Daytripper is a hybrid kayak, it is 1/2 canoe and 1/2 kayak. It combines all the great features of a canoe and kayak and rolls them into one awesome boat! It has all the maneuverability of a kayak plus all the space of a canoe. The kayak one weighs a light 42 pounds. A wide open cockpit allows easy entry and exit from the boat.

Clear Creek Paddle with Jackson Daytripper

I tried this kayak for the first time on Clear Creek. Clear Creek flows into the Hocking River next to our Trip III drop off point. (Also next to the Sunoco Gas Station on Highway 33). We started at a covered bridge and finished as Clear Creek connected into the Hocking, all together the trip was about 11 miles. This trip would be one of the most popular canoe livery trips if the water was not so shallow. The scenery is spectacular; amazing rock formations, cliffs and lots of wildlife. I counted 8 geese, 3 Great Blue Herons, 2 beavers some Kingfishers. The problem is the water is shallow. There is only about 1-2 month window when the water is deep enough for paddling. April is usually when water levels are at their highest but we still struck bottom with the Jackson several times. I had to have Kyra jump out of our boat so I could get by.

Review

TOTATALLY AWESOME!
This boat will be a huge hit this year. It has all the key features our customers want: comfortability, and the kayak looks awesome. With a doubt it is our new favorite recreational kayak. Come visit and by one of the first to try it out! My inclination is that after one ride using the Jackson Daytripper you will never use another kayak on the Hocking!

Happy Paddling

Shane

.

Back by popular demand!

Since so many customers enjoyed the canoe - horseback package last year, we have renewed the contract with Happy Trails Horseback Riding to provide a great deal on two excellent outdoor activities. We initially wanted to redo our gift shop and add pictures into the lobby area. Although putting in a gift shop is a good idea, we got a little ambitious and decided to redo everything! On April 1st 2010, the project began to redesign the entire outlook of the canoe livery. This project has been broken down into four phases; 1. Repaint the entire canoe livery. 2 Put wood siding on the building. 3 Add and redo the gift room. 4. Build kayak racks for all the new kayaks. So when you visit us the year do not be surprised if you do not recognize the building! Check out our website for more details. Hope to see you soon!

1. repaint all the walls of the canoe livery.

The colors picked were tan and brick red around the trim. The colors definitely "liven" the building up.

2. We put white pine siding around the entire building. The gives us the ideal rustic look.

3. It has always been a no no to stand up while kayaking. The Nalu was manufactored to allow paddlers to stand up and sit down. This takes kayaking to a whole new level of fun. The technology division at Hocking Valley Canoe Livery has been putting in several sleepless night during the the offseason to internally produce one of the most comphresenive canoeing online payment systems available. No previous canoe livery reservation system had existed, making the creation of one a great and rewarding challenge. Although one may not notice the system's greatness at first, it means several things for our valued customers. The system was based on OUR customers in mind highlighting four main points!

1. Complete reservations can be done online
Save time online! Book your trip online in less than 30 seconds. When you arrive at the canoe livery skip the line and go straight to the departure zone. It is that simple

2. Easy and simple

WARNING: Parents with little ones need to secure their credit cards because this online reservation system is so easy and simple that a first grader can use it. All you need is an internet browser, internet connection, form of payment and the ability to read and write English.

3. The system was made internally

Since the system was made completely by us, all on the form data is only seen by us. It has always been our policy to be 100% confidential with all customer information.

4. Everything is secure through Google
This morning the Google contract was finalized gaureenteeing every dollar spent on this system is 100% secure! Google is one of the most respected companies in the world and is the one of the main reasons we will be doing business with them.t

Go ahead and check it out http://www.hockinghillscanoeing.com/reservation_request.htm

To making your visit EVEN better,

Hocking Valley Canoe Livery

Treating customer service like DATING

Customer Service is the lifeblood of any business. One pizza facility may have the best pizza on the planet but I'm not going there again if it is served 30 minutes late from an unfriendly staff. Service is usually the reason behind customers repeating their business. If a customer decides to repeat their business, more than likely the decision is based on the service not the product. A good company will be able to define customer service and how they can execute it. For 2010 Hocking Valley Canoe Livery plans to treat customer service as if they were dating each and every customer!

When dating, first impressions are everything.
We spent a good portion of the off season updating our website to make more visually appealing. While making it visually appealing was important, it was our top priority to publish lots of useful information. You can find everything on our website, from Superior Cabins, area attractions to
detailed information about the Hocking River.

Dating requires questions to be asked and the answers to be taken seriously.
Over the years the popularity of kayaking has grown tremendously. As kayaking has grown so has the expectations of a perfect kayak. Customers have asked for a kayak that is comfortable, unique, spacious and easy to maneuver. As the 2010 season draws near, we have answered the demand with some of the best kayaks available, including Old Town Nalu, Old Town Vapors, Jackson Riveria's and Jackson Daytrippers. The best part is they are all NEW for 2010

Dating often requires humor and creativity to build a relationship.
Being transparent is an important characteristic in today's modern world. The abundance of social networks has made this task easy and fun. Get to know us on our website before your visit

In a relationship, always follow through on what you promise

As the 201o season approaches we are prepared to offer 10 additional camping sites overlooking the Hocking River. Spots on the Hocking were in demand last year and unfortunately not everyone was able to get a riverside campsite. This off season we expanded the campsites and and added additional sites to give our customers more of what they want!

Hopefully we can begin dating and (if we do things right) one day we can end up married!

HOCKING HILLS RECOGNITION

Picture of Amir Eylon -State Tourism Director giving a presentation on current trends in Ohio Tourism

Friday March 12th was the Ohio Campground Owners Assocation 2010 Spring Conference and Trade Show. The conference gave light on several current trends in Ohio Tourism Industry. At this point we all know that in these economic times people are looking to maintain their summer vacations, but are looking to do so without the expensive travel costs. This trend has actually worked out favorably in Ohio's favor. More people are finding weekend attractions in Ohio rather than going to Mytle Beach or Dysney Land. The research that Amir Eylon presented showed that Ohio has been relatively unaffected by the economic downside. The HOCKING HILLS area in particular has shown growth in tourism. This was evident from the fact that Mr. Eyon constantly referred to the Hocking Hills in his presentation. There is no doubt that the Hocking Hills has become known as an Ohio destination. We look foward to this upcoming year

Top Ten for 2010

It is March and canoe season is right around the corner. Here are the top ten reasons to visit us in 2010!

Hocking Valley Canoe Livery has Experience.

Before the Hocking Hills was known as a premiere center for outdoor adventure a little outfitter existed, Hocking Valley Canoe Livery. We started with 10 aluminum canoes in 1976 and have grown little by little every year. While we are still “small” by some standards, we will always be big on service. Experience has taught us only one thing matters: customers. We are not judged by what we say but how and what we do; and to this end we will continue do everything to ensure each customer has the best outdoor experience.

Hocking Valley Canoe Livery has the Best Equipment.

We think “outside of the box” when it comes to providing you with the best equipment. First we are one of the only outfitters in the country to incorporate backrests on some Old Town Discovery Canoes at no additional cost. Second, only a handful of canoe livery’s in the Midwest offer the Nalu Stand up Kayak. The Nalu is a paddle board that is absolutely huge in the West Coast; it is our hope to introduce paddle boarding to the Hocking Hills. Finally we have embraced the increasing popularity of kayaking. More and more people prefer to kayak every year. You have followed this trend and our proud to offer the best variety of kayaks!

Hocking Valley Canoe Livery has the Location.

Hocking Valley Canoe Livery is located in the scenic Hocking Hills. Many experts foresee the Hocking Hills becoming Ohio’s top tourism attraction. With nine FREE State Parks that link hundreds of miles of trails together it is not hard to see that prediction become reality. Add to that equation other outdoor attractions including canopy tours, ATV rentals, bicycle trails and horseback riding, being centrally located in the Hocking Hills is the place to be! And if it is nice to be located in the Hocking Hills, then having a good portion of land is even better. Our three facilities (canoe livery, campground, and fun center) have a combined 273 acres. This translates to spacious campsites, private trails and ample room for any type of group function.

Hocking Valley Canoe Livery is Affordable.

Why not be the family hero since are prices are so affordable? Take the family (two adults and two kids) on a 5 mile canoe ride for less than $35. For an all day event do the Fun Package for $30 a person. Call up your old college roommates or recruit your coworkers because 12 people are all you need for a discount. (It is ok if you do not know or like most of them)

Hocking Valley Canoe Livery has Special Packages.

A wise man once told us that people like saving money. That got us thinking…… “Why not package the activities our customers are going to do anyway and offer them at a discount?” What transpired was the Family Fun Package, two-go kart rides 18 hole miniature golf, driving range and two hour canoe trip, and Canoe Horseback Package, canoeing and horseback riding at one low price.

Hocking Valley Canoe Livery has Riverside Camping.

We think the Hocking Hills and camping go together like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. You need the peanut butter and jelly for a complete sandwich; similarly camping in the Hocking Hills provides a complete outdoor experience. The Riverside Campground is within 20 minutes of all nine Hocking Hills State Parks and within .25 miles from the new Zipline. In addition to being close to all the Hocking Hills attractions, we have 60 campsites and 10 electric sites that are close to the Hocking River. In fact, most sites allow you to swim and/or fish from your campsite. So if you are looking for a campground that provides a total outdoor experience, we have the campground for you.

Hocking Valley Canoe Livery has the Best Trips.

The best Hocking River trips means a slowly increasing distribution of miles and time to ensure you get the adventure that is right for you. Crocketts Run to Livery is 5 miles and 1-2 hours, Natural Rockbridge to Livery is 7 miles/ 2-3 hours, Clear Creek to Livery is 11 miles and 3-5 hours and finally, Rush Creek to Livery, is 19 miles and 10 hours. Each expedition increases just enough so you are on the river for the desired amount of time.

Hocking Valley Canoe Livery is Family Owned.

There is a difference between being family owned and being operated by an outside corporation. Outdoor adventure is not only what we do, it is ALL we do. Every decision is made in house with our customers in mind. More than likely you will meet the people that have worked hard to keep the canoe livery in operation for so long. You can even engage in coversation on why they started the canoe livery. (What they were thinking?)

Hocking Valley Canoe Livery has the Facilities.

There is no doubt that facilities are important. We have two shower houses. One is located at the conclusion of your river trip and the other is within a short distance of the Riverside Campground. We also have two picnic pavilions (free of charge) for anyone camping or taking a river trip.

Hocking Valley Canoe Livery provides Fun Customer Service.

So What? Every company has some sort of equipment, every company has a “location” and every company has a “facility”. If all the above are the same, then one aspect stands out: customer service. Hocking Valley Canoe Livery believes that since canoeing and kayaking are fun, service should be offered that way too. We will not put your in front of a generic safety video before your departure; instead we prefer hands on instruction, passionate canoeists teaching you the basic paddle techniques, the type of wildlife to expect and everything in between. On the shuttle to river destinations, we discuss historic landmarks, the Natural Rockbridge and the Hocking Canal. Customer service starts before you sign up for a trip, before you set foot in the parking lot and before you make the initial reservation. Customer service starts the minute you find out about us. We strive to answer all emails and phone calls within the same day and provide you with the best information so you can make the most of your time in the Hocking Hills, even if it is not booking with us. Customer service is always the difference and we are sticking to it. It took about eight hours to get their headquarters from Logan Ohio, but the drive was definitely worth it. The main reason I wanted to pick them up instead of having them shipped was to view their facility. I always thought it would be interesting to see how an important product to us was made. The production of kayaks is down to a science at Jackson Kayaks. First it takes several months for them to design the mold for a kayak. After the mold is made it is shipped out to make a solid alumiunum mold. Once the alumimum mold is shipped back to the factory they can begin producing kayaks. They start with putting powdered plastic into the molds. The color varies depending on the outfitter's desire. I requested blue and white tiedye. It gives kind of like a cloud color look. Anyways after the mold if filled with plastic they put it into an oven. The oven is probably about 10 feet by 20 feet. So it is pretty big. It takes several hours before the kayak can be taken out of the oven. Once it is taken out of the oven it is taken to the assembly line, where are the accessories are added to the kayak. They can only make 60 kayaks a day and they work 24 hours. That gives you an idea of much time goes into making a kayak. So while it may still be winter you can still have a summer mindset with the top ten objects to bring in 2010. While all these items are not completely necessary for a good time the more you bring the more likely you will have a blast!
1. Good Friends – Recreational activities as fun as canoeing deserve to be shared with several people. Canoeing tends to bring people together and create everlasting memories. Bring as many friends as possible to share your canoeing experience.
2. Waterproof Camera- Think of the great pictures you can take on the Hocking River. The Hocking is scenic and undeveloped much like it was one hundred years ago. Therefore there are abundant opportunities for great photographs. Odds are you will want the camera when a Great Blue Herring flies a few feet in front of you or when a few deer cross the river. Also you will want to get good photographs of your friends and family. A waterproof camera is strongly recommended. If your camera is not waterproof we would recommend keeping it in your car. Plastic bags rarely work in keeping cameras dry. A reusable waterproof camera is for sale at the Canoe Livery for around $10
3. Wacky Water Tubes - What do we mean by wacky water tubes? To name a few, wacky water tubes include giant floating turtles, gorillas, and whales. Adding a tube of this nature adds extra fun. Not only will you be the envy of fellow canoeist but you also have the option of jumping of the canoe and riding a giant whale pass a few river bends. While we do not have carry wacky water tubes in our office, (they can be found easily online) we do carry basic tubes
4. Pets- Several customers forget their animal friends because they thought animals were not allowed. Pets are encouraged since they truly man's best friend
5. Water shoes-The worst footwear to wear would be nice shoes because it is guarantee they will get wet and dirty. Flip flops will immediately come off while swimming in the river, old sneakers will remain soaked hours after the trip (plus your feet will get stinky) and going bear foot exposes your feet to sharp rocks on the bottom of the river bed. One might ask “What is left to wear?” Water shoes!! Water shoes are an absolute inexpensive necessity. We sell them at our shop between $10-15.
6. Cooler- Bringing a cooler is recommended, especially on the longer trips. However we do not allow stroayphroam coolers simply because if the canoe capsizes the cooler will bust and leave debris across the river. The average width of a canoe is three feet. Keep this in mind when deciding what size cooler to bring. Since the river is undeveloped much like it was one hundred years ago there are numerous river banks to stop for a peaceful lunch. Stopping on a river bank for a snack or ice cold beverage is one the most enjoyable experiences on the Hocking.
7. Trash Bags- Most people want to keep the river clean for future generations. To this end it essential to canoe from the mindset of leaving only footprints. Being prepared with a trash bag ensures that all debris will end up in its proper place. Also be a good citizen and pick up a few bottles and cans along the way.
8. Lifejacket for the rope swing- Most of people can stand up in the Hocking River since it was an average depth of 3-4 feet. While bringing a lifejacket is required by law it is also a necessity if you are considering jumping of the rope swings. There are two rope swings located on the Hocking River. Once one is completely out on the rope swing they are approxamitely 15-20 feet above the water.
9. Sunglasses- Keep the sun out your eyes will still maintaining a relaxed look.
10. Back Rests-Being comfortable is one of the most important characteristics on a river trip. Back rests are necessary in being relaxed throughout the entire trip. Fortunately we include backrests at no additional charge on our rentals

Did I miss anything? Well then consider joining Friends of the Hocking River!
The Friends of the Hocking River (FOHR) was established in January 1999 by a group of individuals dedicated to preserving one of the area’s most scenic natural resources, the Hocking River. The mission of FOHR is to preserve the environmental integrity, educate the general public, and promote wise use of the Hocking River. Over the years FOHR has maintained its commitment to protect the Hocking River through annual river clean ups. Every year the FOHR pulled out everything from tires to bicycles to refrigerators. It is through these efforts that the 20 mile stretches from Sugar Grove to the 93 South Intersection is arguably the cleanest stretch of the entire river. Anyone that has paddled past the 93 intersection will notice an increase in debris, particularly tires. Pass the 93 junction there are banks and islands littered with trash. Some river islands contain up to twenty tires. Only an organized river sweep could efficiently clean some stretches. FOHR needs more members to maintain river clean ups and to possibly push past the 93 intersection to Haydenville and possible Nelsonville. Another reason to consider joining is the social aspect of FOHR
Although the main component of FOHR is to protect river quality, there is definitely a social aspect to the group. Community develops naturally when people share common interests for a just cause. It is no coincidence that all members are outdoor enthusiasts. Paddling is a release and members look for every opportunity to get on the river. Uniting and encouraging members to get on the river is one advantage of FOHR. Monthly trips are planned on the Hocking and other rivers throughout the state. FOHR is looking for new members who want to assist in clean-up efforts. Time commitments are only 1-2 hours a month. Meetings are on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm at the Logan Library. The first meeting of the New Year is coming up this January 5th at 6:30pm. Please consider joining us then! It is time to put together all the feedback from our customers in terms of deciding which kayaks to order for 2010. If the trend of the last two years has taught us anything is that kayaking is a growing sport. More and more people prefer to go into water sports solo. While there are solo canoes available, they do not come close in design flexibility and options. For the most part canoes have stayed constant over the 30 last years. Outfitter canoes continue to maintain the same basic components, two seats, a thwart, yoke, and plenty of room for storage. While one can buy into the concept of “If it is not broke do not fix it” there is certain an element of anxiousness in waiting for kayak manufacturers, Old Town, Jackson, We-no-nah and others in releasing their new products. In purchasing kayaks for 2010 it was important to identify the characteristics that our customers want in a kayak rental. Without a doubt four aspects stand out, comfortability, spaciousness, maneuverability, and uniqueness. Simply put customers want a big kayak that looks good while still being comfortable and easy to handle. The four models ordered The Nalu, The Vapor, The Riveria, and The Daytripper. Below are kayak descriptions with a classification of their characteristic. Check them out and prepare to use them in the summer!

The Nalu - NEW!

Characterisitc: Unique and Maneuverability

As for as uncommon kayaks you have not seen anything close to the Nalu! It is similar to a paddleboard which has become extremely popular on the west coast. We are one of the only outfitters in the east to offer the paddling expereince of the Nalu- — a sit-on-top that you can stand up and paddle! The Ocean Kayak Nalu paddle board is a stable platform for any beginning to intermediate paddler or paddle boarder. Perfect in flat water or moderate surf, the Nalu delivers a different kind of fun on the water. Take the challenge this year! This model responded with great reviews. Everyone from all ages and skill levels enjoyed the Vapor. It was an easy decision to bring back the Vapor for 2010. This sporty kayak offers a stable, efficient and comfortable ride. Our Vapor goes way beyond the basics with features, while the Vapor 10XT takes it a step further. Either way, with features like this, getting a workout is as easy as grabbing your water bottle and heading to your nearest body of water.

The Riveria
Characteristics: Comfortable, spaciousness, maneuverability, and uniqueness

Jackson Kayak is known for ultra comfort, durability and performance... and this kayak takes all of that to a new level. This new addition to our brand is the perfect kayak for those looking for something stable, at a great price, but probably most important to this type of kayak... COMFORT!
We are proud to represent the "Riviera"! Think sun tans, think plush comfort, think leisure and you have "The Riviera". It was inspired by a large group of resorts that needed a super comfortable sit on top with a huge focus on durability.

The Daytripper
Characteristics: Comfortable, spaciousness, maneuverability, and uniqueness

The recreational kayak has just been re-invented with the onset of Jackson Rec’s Day Tripper line and you can expect more from your paddling experience then ever before. The Day Trippers are the new face of what to expect in comfort, versatility and access to the great outdoors. These kayaks are fantastic for folks that like to bring kids or a dog along with them on occasion but don’t want a full tandem. They are perfect for those that used to be in canoes but want to try kayaking. They also create the perfect platform for catching more fish… And for those looking to escape to the quite side of the lake, but don’t want to leave the creature comforts behind such as tents, coolers, and picnicking items, the Day Tripper provides the carrying capacity for everything you could need. Basically the Day Trippers are designed to be just what you want from a kayak… fun, super comfortable and easy to paddle, with a ton of options for whatever you might want to do when paddling.
The Day Trippers truly are different and are ushering in a fresh experience for those looking for more out of their recreational kayak. Their focus is on providing the room and versatility required for anyone that wants to bring the vast array of items that help make the experience on the water that much better.
§ Want to bring your dog along? There is plenty of room for the dog maybe even two!
§ Want to bring a child along? Without a doubt it was the craziest season that I have been apart off. With the economic times it is hard to believe that we were able to move foward as a business this season. In fact it is hard to believe but the 2009 season was our best year ever! And that is a span of over 36 years. A few things came into to place to make this our best year ever...
Number one: Staff... We had a great staff this year. I can't thank everyone enough for their hard work and sharing in the vision of providing every guest an excellent experience. Without our staff we would not have such a successful season

Number two: Community Outreach- Kayak Football, Canoe for the Cure, Pet-A-Poolza, and River Cleans added to our efforts in contributing to the community

Number three: Hocking Hills Area has grown substanially. Luckly we have been able to grow with the area

Number four (most importantly) our customers: Customers have been great once again. For those of who do not know the Hocking River is a contributary to the Ohio River. I would estimate the Hocking River to around 140 miles, starting from Lancaster and concluding in the town of Hockingport. Since the Canoe Livery is roughly 20 miles south of the start of the river, we would be canoeing an estimated 120 miles to the Ohio River. Truth be said our experience with the river south of the Canoe Livery was limited. All of our trips conclude at the Canoe Livery so there is less opportunity to canoe south. Anyways the point is we started the trip with no idea how long it would take to canoe 120 miles. We gave ourselves a three day window to reach the Ohio River.

Our primary objective was to reach Hockingport, but we picked a few other towns upstream incase we were unable to reach our goal. We wanted to reach the Ohio River, in reality we were just happy to spend three days on the river.

As it turns we were way off in our prediction of making it to the Ohio River in three days. We canoed around 8-10 hours each day and by the 3rd day we had only reached Athens. Athens was a midpoint between the Canoe Livery and Hockingport, leaving us an estimated 60 miles to reach the Ohio River. We ended up calling it a trip about 10 miles south of Athens. We found a nice place to set up camp and a good destination for someone to pick us up in the morning.

The first day was awesome. We started out around 10:30 canoeing past the old Falls Mill Bridge. The section of the river is one of highlights of the entire river. We canoed until about 6:30 and camped probably 10 miles north of the Nelsonville. I would guess we did about 20 miles that day. The great thing about canoeing with a bunch of outdoor guys is that once we decided to stop for the night everyone did their part to get the camp going. For example Wayne and Rodney immediately started gathering wood, Randy got the fire going and began fixing dinner, (he made chilli which was excellent), Joe and I set up the tent.

There is no doubt in my mind that the highlight of the second night was where we camped. It beautiful sandbar stretching about 400 yards of clean sand and gravel. I believe it was the best sandbar on the entire river. Tacklebox, Randy, and Wayne would probably mention a highlight of the second day was eating squriell for dinner. Tacklebox had shot two squriells along the river and we ended having them for dinner. That was the first time I had eaten squriell (and probably the last)

Unfortunately, the worst part of the second day was canoeing past Nelsonville. I believe that the Hocking River is a clean river with a healthy eco-system. However, It was a little dissappointing to notice the drop in waeater quality once we entered the Nelsonville area. We passed a sign that stated (and I'm paraphrasing) "Warning swimming in the river can be hazardous to your health because of local sewage run-offs." The sign is unacceptable, something should be done instead of reasoning that a sign will fix the sewage into the river problem.

The third was our intended "lazy day" We were canoeing past Athens. In the 1980's the river was rerouted to keep the town from flooding. The river was dredged to almost three times its orginal width. Whether dredging the river was a good idea remains a great debate to this day. The river looks more like a shallow lake. There are no trees along the bank and the river is only about one foot deep in most places.

The three day was great. We are thinking of offering this three day trip next year to our customers.

Canoe for the Cure

Connie Barbini, founder of Hocking Valley Canoe Livery and Fun Center, was first diagnosed with Breast Cancer in the summer of 2000. She took Chemotherapy and all the necessary treatments to clear her from cancer. One year later we were ecstatic to hear the treatments led her to be cancer free. Unfortunately, like cancer so often does, the cancer came back two years later. This time the cancer was stronger than before. The cancer became so strong that Connie was forced to retire from her beloved job as Micro-Biologist at the Fairfield Medical Center. In 2004 the cancer began to spread throughout her body. It was starting to reach her spine and brain. From 2004 to 2009 she spent one to two hours every Tuesday receiving treatment for her cancer. All the efforts from doctors, physicians, family, and friends turned out to be futile. The cancer had grown resistant to all forms of treatment. She tried every type of available treatment, from radiation to separate chemo pills. Throughout the turmoil she never once complained of her situation. Instead of sulking she always put others first. She continued to be a great mom, wife, and friend.
In January of 2009 we received the worst news possible. The doctors stated there was nothing more they could do to treat Connie’s cancer. They had exhausted every type of treatment and they gave her an estimated time of three months. One month later she passed away at the age of 60. She spent eight long years fighting cancer. In the end, it was a fight she could not win because there is no cure. Regrettably, Connie’s situation is not unique. Many families have to watch their loved ones slowly pass because of an untreatable disease. The situation is devastating to the victim and all friends and family.
On October 10 th 2009, Connie’s friends and family have decided to sponsor an event called Canoe for the Cure. The event features Naturalists Paul Knoop and Alan Cohen in a guided tour of the Natural Rockbridge, Hocking Canal, wetlands, and other noteworthy points of interest during a short canoe trip. The cost of the guided tour is $35 a person. The cost includes a Canoe for the Cure T-shirt and lunch. The tour starts at 12:30. The tour is expected last around two hours.

The other portion of the event includes two great canoe races. The first is the classic canoe race, followed by the up the creek without a paddle contest. The classic canoe race is .5 mile race starting and ending at the canoe livery. The second race is called up the river without a paddle. This race is approximately .25 miles, but the catch is there is no paddle involved. Both races are family friendly and aimed at all ages and skills levels. The first three places of each race will receive a prize from a local tourism attraction. The cost of each race is $20 a person and includes a canoe for the cure T-shirt.

KAYAK FOOTBALL

What is Kayak Football you may ask? I think it can best be described as a mixture of ultimate freesbie, football, rugby, and water polo. I got the idea for the game when I was at the annual Canoe Livery Convention in Florida. The conference's keynote speaker talked about how he played Kayak Football on the Leigh River. Typically kayak football is played on whitewater rivers where most kayakers have skirts for their kayaks. Having a skirt on the kayak allows one to easliy rollover without falling out of the boat. This would prove to be the main challenge in starting kayak football on the Hocking River (which is not a whitewater river)

If we were going to bring the game to Hocking Hills we would have to alter the rules since no one has a kayak with a skirt. Since no one has a skirt, kayakers can only tip opponents if they are in their boat. When a kayaker is tipped they can be out of the game for 5-10 minutes draining their boat. Compare that to whitewater kayak when they are never out of the game since they can just roll back over. However, the game has proved to be a blast for our staff and the community.

We started our first game on May 25th 2009. The staff told their friends and we got a showing of 8 people. Since then we have played every Tuesday at 6p.m. The numbers have varied from 18 people playing to as few as 6. Regardless of the numbers we play every Tuesday at 6p.m. The great thing about the game is it is free. Hocking Valley Canoe Livery provides the kayaks, paddles, and lifejackets. All one needs is to show up! Everyone is welcome! Be sure to show up even if you are just interested in watching. We have a cheering section as well. Remember: Tuesdays at 6p.m., free, everything is provided, and TELL A FRIEND!

Canoe Livery, A Lifestyle

What is it like to work at the canoe livery? Similar to many summer tourist attractions, we make our living during the three months (June, July, and August) and spend the next nine months planning for those three months. All in all it is a great life-style. Its hard to complain about spending the day on the river. I can think of a few jobs that I've had that do not compare with the canoe livery. Owning a small business has it own rewards as well. Technically you can be off work at any notice. Although many of us know that is not true. Below are a list of frequently asked questions that I thought I would share with you.

What do you do in the offseason

We do not do anything. We go straight into hibernation. After dealing intensely with customers for 3-6 months I do not want to see another person. I am joking, if I only had to work three months out the year I would have a better job than a beer taster or movie critic. The truth is the offseason is when the manual work begins. There is no doubt that the best time to prepare for growing the business is in the offseason. For example last year we removed close to 100 trees from the campground. In addition we created a new website and did plenty of maintenance

What is it like owning a recreational business?

It has been enjoyable in watching the Canoe Livery grow. Each year it seems we grow a little bit more. Every year that we grow more and more people come through our doors. It proposes a challenge as we grow in giving our customers the individual attention that they deserve. Owning a small business can be comparable to raising a child. There is a lot of work that goes into it, but the end result makes it all worth it.
