Canoe Livery, A Lifestyle

What is it like to work at the canoe livery? Similar to many summer tourist attractions, we make our living during the three months (June, July, and August) and spend the next nine months planning for those three months. All in all it is a great life-style. Its hard to complain about spending the day on the river. I can think of a few jobs that I've had that do not compare with the canoe livery. Owning a small business has it own rewards as well. Technically you can be off work at any notice. Although many of us know that is not true. Below are a list of frequently asked questions that I thought I would share with you.

What do you do in the offseason

We do not do anything. We go straight into hibernation. After dealing intensely with customers for 3-6 months I do not want to see another person. I am joking, if I only had to work three months out the year I would have a better job than a beer taster or movie critic. The truth is the offseason is when the manual work begins. There is no doubt that the best time to prepare for growing the business is in the offseason. For example last year we removed close to 100 trees from the campground. In addition we created a new website and did plenty of maintenance

What is it like owning a recreational business?

It has been enjoyable in watching the Canoe Livery grow. Each year it seems we grow a little bit more. Every year that we grow more and more people come through our doors. It proposes a challenge as we grow in giving our customers the individual attention that they deserve. Owning a small business can be comparable to raising a child. There is a lot of work that goes into it, but the end result makes it all worth it.
